FK; Example 1 of an Opening Sequence

The Ring (Verbinski 2002)   Opening Sequence
(Screen shots taken from DVD of the film due to copyright laws)
  • The house is quite a good location as it makes it feel more mundane as it could happen to anyone and also the house is supposed to be a "safe haven" and therefore this threatens the audience more.
  • The rainy and stormy weather at the start of this extract builds up the horror and creates a dark and gloomy atmosphere
  • The victim in the piece is female which is typical of a horror film. This carries on throughout the film with the protagonist needing "rescuing".
  • The close up of the teleophone is interesting as it is the peak in the film, when the audience become scared. The phone becomes a motif of horror through out the film ( as it always rings before somebody dies). The use of props such as this could be good to consider.
