FK: Example 3 of a Opening Sequence

The Stepfather (McCormick 2009)

  • The casualness of the scene is what draws my attention to it. Once again the use of a house as the location makes it have a certain mundane realism about the piece.  The fact he is simply doing his morning routine makes the eventual discovery of the dead bodies seem more shocking.
  • The use of props makes the scene seem even more sinister, for example the christmas tree. This is also done through the costume, as the audience are aware of just how young the children are (from their pyjamas)The use of "Silent Night" as digetic sound makes it seem worse as well.
  • This tense atmosophere is created, where the audience are inticipating something to happen, and are aware that something is not right, yet they are not sure yet. I would like this in our film too.
